Buying CBD for Dogs

The first recorded use of cannabis as a medicine was in China in 2727 BC, and has been used on every continent throughout our history. During the 19th century, physicians in India experimented and documented the benefits of cannabis in the treatment of horses and dogs. One of the main compounds in the cannabis plant is CBD, or cannabidiol, which is non-psychoactive unlike the other main compound, THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

CBD oil is safe and very effective in treating dogs with a wide variety of ailments and conditions. While not a comprehensive list, CBD can successfully address seizures, chronic pain, arthritis, anxiety, cancer, skin issues, inflammation, spasms, and it can stimulate appetite.

Dogs are not suited for THC preparations of cannabis medication. Make sure that the CBD products you purchase for your dog do not contain more than .3% THC.

Pets have an endocannabinoid system

Dogs have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) just like their owners. All mammals have an ECS, and that is why CBD and THC are so successful in creating balance in our bodies. We have receptors throughout our bodies whose only job is to interact with cannabinoids. Exhibiting sluggishness or pain may be an indication that your dog is cannabinoid deficient. If your dog is experiencing fatigue, pain, or extreme stress, CBD may restore your pet’s health and wellness.

Dosing

When buying CBD oil for your pet, make sure you understand the proper dosing before giving CBD oil to your dog. Your pet is much smaller than you are, so learn how to dose before you begin. You always want to start with low doses, and increase the dosage until your pet shows maximum benefit. Buying CBD treats for dogs is an easy way to micro-dose your pet until you and your dog reach the optimum dose and frequency.

What does your vet have to say?

Chances are, your Vet may be silent on the use and benefits of CBD oil. Because CBD oil is not an FDA approved supplement, veterinarians are prohibited from prescribing any cannabis product. But that doesn’t mean that your Vet is opposed to your using CBD for your dog.

According to the American Kennel Club, their Canine Health Foundation is sponsoring a study through the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. This study will look at the use of CBD on dogs that are treatment-resistant to pharmaceutical epileptic drugs. It is interesting to note that William Brooke O’Shaughnessy in India did the same study in the 1840’s.

More and more veterinarians are embracing the value of CBD is treating ailments experienced by your dog.
